How Bidding Works on BidChips

Per-piece pricing, proxy max bids that pay one increment over the runner-up, Buy-It-Now, reserves, and what happens in the 24 hours after you win a lot.

Every lot on BidChips is priced per piece, and the winner pays one increment over the next-highest bidder — never their full maximum unless another buyer pushes the price there. You can place a single bid, set a proxy maximum and let the platform bid for you, or take the Buy-It-Now price and skip the clock. The lot closes when its clock runs out, unless a late bid extends it, and a winning bid is a binding offer to buy.

That is the whole mechanism. The rest of this page is the detail a procurement buyer needs before placing a first bid.

Why is every price shown per piece?

Because per piece is the only number you can compare against your standard cost. A lot of 14,000 pieces at a headline total tells you nothing until you divide; a lot at $0.42/pc tells you immediately whether it beats the quote on your desk.

So every figure on a BidChips lot — the current bid, the Buy-It-Now price, the reserve status, and the bid history — carries a /pc suffix unless the lot says otherwise. Quantity is shown separately, as context, not folded into the price (FAQ).

What are the three ways to buy a lot?

MethodWhat you payWhen it closesWhen to use it
Submit a bidYour bid, if it stands at close and meets the reserveAt the lot’s closing timeYou have a firm per-piece ceiling and can watch the close
Proxy max bidOne increment over the next-highest bidder, up to your maximumAt the lot’s closing timeYou have a ceiling and do not want to babysit the auction
Buy-It-Now (BIN™)The fixed BIN price per pieceInstantlyLine-down, allocation, or a hard ship date — certainty beats waiting

Check the lot’s closing time on its page; each lot shows when it ends.

How does a proxy max bid work?

You enter the most you are willing to pay per piece. BidChips then bids on your behalf, only as high as needed to stay in front of the next bidder. If the runner-up stops at $0.38/pc and the increment is one step above that, you pay one step above $0.38 — not the $0.50 maximum you entered. You never overpay by more than a single increment (FAQ).

The increment itself is set per lot; BidChips does not publish a fixed schedule. Read the lot page for the current step.

What does Buy-It-Now do?

BIN is a fixed per-piece price that ends the auction for that lot the moment you take it. It costs more than a lot that clears near the reserve, and that premium buys certainty. When a line is down, that is usually the right trade.

What does the reserve mean for a bidder?

A reserve is the seller’s floor. The lot will not sell below it, and the lot page shows Reserve Met or Reserve Not Met so you know where your bid stands. A high bid that sits under the reserve does not win, even if it is the highest at close.

Sellers on BidChips typically set the reserve low — around 5–15% of the lowest distribution price — and let open bidding set the actual clearing number (FAQ). That is why a low opening bid is a real strategy, not a wasted click: there is no penalty for bidding under the current price, and the reserve is often closer to your target than the ask you got from a broker.

What happens in the final minutes?

Two things protect you from losing a lot to a last-second bid.

Accepting Final Bids. As a lot approaches its close, its status moves to Accepting Final Bids. That is your signal to confirm your proxy maximum is where you want it.

Sniper protection. If a bid lands in the final moments, the close is extended so other bidders can respond. Nobody wins by timing a bid one second before the clock; the auction stays open until the bidding actually stops.

Are bids binding?

Yes. Per the Terms, every bid submitted through BidChips is a legally binding offer to purchase, and winning bidders are obligated to complete the transaction. BidChips can reject bids, modify increments, extend durations, or cancel an auction to protect the marketplace — and a bidder who does not complete a purchase risks account suspension.

Bid what you would actually pay. A proxy maximum is a commitment, not a placeholder.

What happens after you win?

The clock does not stop at close. Per the lot terms and the Terms:

StepDeadlineDetail
Submit your POWithin 24 hours of the winning notificationThe proforma invoice follows
Pay the PIWithin 24 hours of receiving itPayment in advance of shipment unless you hold written credit terms
ShippingFOB originYou pay shipping, duties, tariffs, and taxes; title and risk of loss pass to you at the carrier
Inspect on receiptWritten notice within 3 calendar daysFor an apparent nonconformity, with a date-stamped photographic Condition Record

All sales are final. Lots without direct traceability ship with a White Horse Laboratories report, and for those lots the certification satisfies the limited warranty; non-certified lots carry a 30-day limited warranty of substantial conformity (Terms §3). Read the clause before you bid on anything you plan to qualify slowly.

For the pre-bid checklist — date codes, packaging tiers, what the lab report covers, budgeting duties — see A Buyer’s Checklist for BidChips Auctions.

Why was it built this way?

The gray market prices components by who is desperate. Brokers stack margin between the OEM holding excess and the buyer who needs it, and neither side sees the other’s number. BidChips puts both in the same room and lets the bid set the price.

“We needed a tool to enable both the OEM with the excess and the buyer of the parts to find a common ground at a fair current market price. We decided to build a platform like eBay, but just for chips.” — John Pallazola, CMO, iBuyXS

The result for a buyer is that you pay one increment over the runner-up, not a markup on a markup. The result for a seller is a clearing price set by real demand. Both can see the bid history, and the authentication report sits on the lot for both to read.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay my full proxy maximum if I win?

No. You pay one increment above the next-highest bidder. Your maximum is only reached if another buyer bids up to it, and then you pay one step over their bid, not more.

What if the reserve is not met at close?

The lot does not sell to the high bidder. The seller can accept a bid below the reserve, adjust the price, or pull the lot — nothing closes without the seller — but a bid under the reserve does not automatically win.

Can I cancel a bid after placing it?

Treat a bid as final. Per the Terms it is a binding offer, and failing to complete a won transaction can lead to suspension. If a bid was entered in error, contact BidChips through the contact page immediately rather than waiting for the close.

Does Buy-It-Now end the whole auction?

It ends the auction for that lot. Other lots in the same event continue on their own clocks.

Where do I see the authentication report?

On the lot in your dashboard. The report is tied to the lot and is visible to both buyer and seller (FAQ).

Before your first bid

Set a per-piece ceiling from your own standard cost, enter it as a proxy maximum, and let the platform do the bidding. Check the closing time, confirm the reserve status, and read the lab report on the lot. Then browse the live auctions and place the number you would actually pay.
